Life as a gaming geek, husband, WoW Mage….
Portals and Pwnage
Not a post about Portal pwning. Although it does.
So this weekend I start off at level 48, having got my first real taste of PvP in WoW. And unlike PvP in CoX, here it’s actually pretty good fun. Although the setup for PvP in WoW is a bit biased towards people at the latter end of what I would call a level bracket (IE 10-19, 30-39, 70-79 etc), as everyone in each bracket has their own separate battleground. So if you’re a round level like 30, 40, 50 etc, then you will likely get your arse handed to you repeatedly by players at the top end of the bracket (lvl 20 vs a 29 etc).
But knowing that going in you accept it and just get on with it, and it is a lot of fun. Deathmatch, PvP and Assault (Arathi Basin, Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley respectively) are the various gametypes available, and they are all equally fun, if not progressively more confusing to a n00b like me – I just wander round and shoot shit. Just like I did in clan games in Quake 3.
Anyhoo, as I said, I kicked off at level 48, and I’m aiming for level 55 by Monday morning, as it’s at that point you get the games only Epic class made available for selection – the Death Knight. I’ve decided that I’ll be using my DK for DPS and tanking and for PvP, as it’ll be nice to get back to playing melĂ©e again, as I was in CoX with my Regen Scrapper. Speaking of which, there’s a free weekend next week for CoX, so I’ll be going back there for a few games, to catch up with my characters, and laugh at how out of date their spec is compared to everyone elses
Portals…
So, Portals? Yes, the Portal you can see above is known as the Dark Portal, a location added in WoW’s 1st expansion, Burning Crusade, which transports you to Outland, which is basically another planet. Or bits of it anyway. Literally. Bits. Bits of Draenor to be precise, the former home of the Orcs (yes, Orcs are actually little green men in every sense, well, maybe not so little…) and the Draenai, the counterpart race to the Blood Elves added with BC. So I took my mage down there shortly after hitting 50, just to see it while getting the achievement for exploring the zone it’s located in. Now since BC launched there’s been a level requirement of at least 58 to get through it, and the newly added portals in the major cities to the Dark Portal have this level requirement indeed in effect. So imagine how surprised I was when I took a run at the Dark Portal and managed to get through to Outland!
Turns out that the level restriction on the transgressing of the DP itself was lifted 7 weeks ago, so anyone of any level, even an ickle level 1 can get through to Outland now. Hurrah!
…and Pwnage
In other news, the Pwnage tool for the iPod Touch 2g was released yesterday/early today. Hurrah!
I had updated to the official 3.1 release about 3 weeks ago, and while I’ve missed having my jailbreak conveniences such as Winterboard, and the ability to kill processes a la Windows Task Manager, I have been impressed by the changes from 2.2.1 to 3.1.1. Such as the ability to search the files on the iPod, the ability to cut copy and paste (a godsend when browsing the official WoW forums, where links are not permitted to be clickable) and not to mention the ability to press and hold on a link and be given the option to open that link in a new browser tab.
The one fly in the ointment though, is that Pwnage Tool is a Mac only app. So I have to still wait, either for custom firmware files to start popping up on the usual hives of scum and villainy around the digital universe, or wait further still for a version of redsn0w to appear for Windows that will do the JB.
Hey ho, back to the race to Death Knight status, eh?
